TAMPA, Florida -- A man suspected of killing a police officer following a bank heist here early Friday killed himself after being barricaded in an apartment for four hours, AFP quoted police as saying. The man, later identified as Nestor Dejesus, had been apparently holding at least one hostage in the apartment with him, Tampa Police Chief Bennie Holder said during a press conference. Dejesus and two other suspects fled to the apartment after being chased by three police officers from the site of a bank robbery. A female police officer was killed in the ensuing exchange of gunfire, and another was wounded. She was the first female police officer killed on duty since Tampa began keeping statistics on police fatalities in 1895. The second police officer was released from a local hospital after treatment for superficial wounds.
